Youth Varsity Wheelchair Basketball Coach

The Head Coach of the Youth Varsity Team is a key leadership role responsible for guiding and developing young athletes throughout the season. This volunteer position involves planning practices, coaching games, fostering player development, and helping athletes grow both on and off the court.

The Head Coach will work closely with an assistant coach, team manager, and organizational leadership to ensure a positive and structured team environment. While competition is an important part of the experience, the primary focus is on long-term athlete development, skill-building, teamwork, and supporting each player’s individual journey.

  • Develops and implements structured weekly practice plans to support athlete growth and team performance.
  • Coaches the team during regional and national tournaments, promoting competitive development and sportsmanship.
  • Maintains clear and consistent communication with athletes and families throughout the season.
  • Coordinates the team’s calendar of competitive and non-competitive events; shares updates (e.g., scores, schedule changes) via Team App, NWBA, and other approved platforms.
  • Upholds SAS behavioral expectations, including adherence to the SAS Code of Conduct and alignment with core organizational values.
  • Collaborates with the Fundraising Committee to support and promote team fundraising initiatives.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as assigned by the Youth Sports Board Program Representative.
  • Completes all required coach and volunteer certifications mandated by NWBA and SAS (at no personal cost).
  • Successfully completes SafeSport training and passes required background checks.
  • Maintains current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification.
  • Serves as a positive role model for SAS athletes and fellow volunteers, maintaining a consistent and engaged presence at practices and tournaments.
  • Demonstrates a personal connection to and clear understanding of SAS’s mission.
  • Possesses strong leadership skills, utilizing effective motivational strategies and promoting a team-first culture.
  • Brings prior coaching experience, ideally with youth, adaptive sports, or athletes with disabilities. General basketball knowledge is valuable; wheelchair basketball experience is a significant plus.
  • Highly organized and dependable—arrives early, stays late, and ensures practices and events run smoothly.
  • Commits to an average of 5 hours per week during the season (September–April), with additional availability for tournament weekends. There are an average of five out-of-town tournaments per season. Travel expenses and per diem are covered by Seattle Adaptive Sports.   • This is a volunteer leadership position requiring ongoing communication and collaboration with the Board Program Representative. If the Head Coach is unable to consistently meet the expectations outlined above, SAS reserves the right to reassign or remove the individual from the role at the discretion of the Board.
