SAS Mission and Purpose

The SAS Mission Statement is to enhance and promote the well-being of physically challenged individuals by giving them the opportunity to participate and compete in athletic and recreational activities.

The Purpose and Vision of SAS is:

  • To work together in the spirit of a team;
  • To enhance our self-esteem;
  • To promote awareness of our abilities;
  • To raise funds to support our efforts; and
  • To have fun.

Seattle Adaptive Sports is a not-for-profit organization, tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. SAS is dedicated to the promotion of the well being of physically challenged individuals, by giving them the opportunity to participate and compete in athletic and recreational activities, including basketball and track. SAS participants benefit from the physical activity and socialization opportunities offered by the organization, improving self-esteem and physical well being, as well as independence.

SAS serves over 100 athletes from the Western Washington area, as well as sponsoring events drawing teams from across the country. Our athletes are physically challenged with disabilities including amputation, spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, low vision, joint damage, severe scoliosis, spina bifida, transverse myelitis, trauma brain injury, and other congenital or acquired conditions affecting their mobility.

Annually, SAS engages in a variety of activities. Each fall, the organization sponsors 6 basketball teams (Futures, Prep, Junior Varsity, Varsity, Womens and Mens), with practices weekly. The teams compete to participate in several tournaments each year. During the winter and spring, these athletes also participate in track⁄field, with several of them participating both on the SAS team and on their high school track teams. SAS seeks to reach out to area school coaches and provide education and training in coaching disabled students and incorporating them into school sports activities.

To support these teams, monies raised help pay for rent of practice facilities, equipment, coaches' travel expenses, expenses to hold local events and regional qualifying meets, and costs associated with tournaments and clinics for both athletes and coaches. SAS seeks to engage as many eligible individuals as possible in its activities by keeping the cost of its activities as low as possible.
